The Business Development Transactions Lead is responsible for the execution of business development activities including product and IP licensing, strategic collaborations, asset out-licensing, and provide overall corporate perspectives to other business relationships


The person in this role will interface with colleagues across various functions within Spark and Roche, manage the deal process and complete transactions.




  • Lead deal teams for various transactions (primarily early stage R&D transactions)
  • Work with the Head of Business Development in the identification of new business opportunities and deal structures that are a good strategic fit with Spark’s strategy 
  • Manage term sheet creation process and coordinate deal negotiations in collaboration with legal / IP partners (internal and external) to draft, negotiate and close contracts
  • Support development of business cases in collaboration with Corporate Strategy and New Product Planning to enable deal assessments and positioning
  • Lead due diligence of opportunities include coordination of internal teams as well as definition, framing and tracking of due diligence activities 
  • Bring best practices to business development diligence activities and further develop diligence capabilities at Spark
  • Support Search and Evaluation in evaluation of technologies of interest, scientific rationale and/or technical feasibility of relevant opportunities
  • Attend relevant industry scientific and/or medical conferences 




  • MBA preferred (or will consider an M.D. /Ph.D. / J.D. with appropriate experience)
  • Generally has 10+ years of relevant industry experience, with at least 5 years in business development/transactions within the biopharma sector (this may include experience in biopharma investment banking or transactional-focused biopharma consultancy)




  • Demonstrated understanding of new technologies/science in biopharma industry with a preference for experience in rare diseases and/or genetic medicine
  • Demonstrated track record of identifying strategic opportunities, developing recommendations, conducting deal processes, and executing a variety of transactions
  • Demonstrated ability to build internal relationships and influence without direct authority
  • Strong interpersonal, analytical and organizational skills
  • Strong decision-making ability, including ability to synthesize complex and diverse inputs to a problem and recommend solutions/preferred options
  • Skillful presenter of scientific and business topics to executives
  • Ability to create, understand and interpret financial models
  • Proficient in Excel and PowerPoint
