Summary

The Strategy & Operations Lead plays a key role in the development and execution of strategic initiatives and special projects to drive performance in the Technical Organization at the direction of the Head Technical Strategy and Operations. This individual will ensure that the right connections and opportunities within the Technical Organization (and the wider business as required) are identified and realized.

They will be accountable to create the right structure and processes to support prioritization, decision making, process efficiency, communication flow, and innovation.  This individual will be responsible for preparing Leadership Team and Steering Committee meetings/materials. They will provide relevant expertise and support the coordination, tracking and monitoring of activities and deliverables for the Technical Organization. 

They will mature the Technical Organization’s strategic operating model and business planning process, navigate differing perspectives to arrive at a cohesive and implementable plan, aligned to the Technical Organization and Spark’s broader strategic objectives.

He/She will facilitate collaboration between Technical line functions and leadership inside and outside the Technical Organization. 

The job requires the ability to positively influence others and work across a matrix.  This individual must be comfortable interacting at all levels of the organization. Excellent interpersonal, motivational and presentation skills are required alongside the ability to work successfully in a team-oriented environment.

 

Responsibilities

 

40% of time:

  • Oversee Technical Strategic Business Planning: facilitate annual refresh of the 1-3yr strategic business plan and performance manage its delivery with the leadership team
  • Help Technical leaders guide prioritization of effort and attention, shape objectives, KPIs, and financial goals to bring our capabilities to bear.
  • Facilitate discussions and debate to reach decisions
  • Act as a key thought partner to Head of Strategy & Ops, Chief Technical Officer and Leadership Team.
  • Bring excellent judgment and relevant experience to bear on a constantly changing set of challenges and opportunities – large and small.
  • Contribute to the ongoing peer-to-peer development of strategic excellence within the technical org.
  • Assist Technical senior leadership with hiring decisions and provide oversight of overall headcount and resource deployment
  • Stay aware and current on latest Technological innovation in drug development, manufacture, testing, supply and allied functional areas
  • Support holistic responsibility for driving the portfolio forward and balancing both long-term strategic vision and operational execution support.

 

 

20% of time:

  • Coordinate standing Leadership team meetings including meeting preparation, attendees, meeting management, minutes and action items.
  • Plan leadership team meetings, townhalls & retreats, developing objectives and agenda, coordinating logistics and interna/external communications to drive transparency.
  • Coordinate activities within the Technical Org, including seminars, internal meetings, advisory boards and consortiums.
  • Oversee meeting preparation and planning for internal and external committees, leadership and Corporate Management meetings.
  • May represent Spark and manage aspects of collaborations with external partners.
  • Coordinate facilitate connectivity, enable within-function and cross-functional reporting.

 

 

40% of time:

  • Take ownership and accountability for managing a variety of short and long-term, cross-organizational projects of a strategic nature;
    • Diagnosis and design of projects to ensure clarity on their goals and relationship to Technical strategy.
    • Implementation of defined goals, translating objectives into clear deliverables and actions.
    • Contribute to the definition and clear articulation of the Technical business strategy and surfacing areas for strategic consideration.
  • Respond to the day-to-day needs of the executive including preparing presentations and correspondence, attending internal or external meetings on behalf of executive, preparing talking points, taking notes
  • Contributes to Portfolio Governance: deliver portfolio analytics, manage governance review, facilitate tracking and project management

 

 

 

 

Requirements

 

  • Requires a bachelor’s degree in a technical, engineering or life sciences discipline; an advanced degree in business or in a scientific field is desirable
  • Minimum of 10 years of directly relevant experience in drug development practices and significant operational and strategic experience across a large portfolio in pharma / biotech field.
  • Must have a relevant technical knowledge on developing, manufacturing and industrializing pharmaceuticals along with a working knowledge of the Biotech or Gene therapy industry, relevant regulations and requirements.
  • Has experience leading matrix teams in a regulated environment.  Demonstrated program management expertise, specifically the ability to scope projects, identify stakeholders, build timelines and budgets, define milestones, provide on-going coordination and leadership including appropriate escalation as required
  • Inter-company collaborations to develop medicines as part of a strategic alliance or partnership a plus
  • Project management certificate a plus.
