Primary Duties:

The Incumbent will be an integral member of Spark’s histopathology team and support multiple gene therapy programs, from ocular and liver diseases to neurodegenerative disorders. 

 

The primary role will be to partner with the members of the research team to acquire, analyze and quantify experimental data, consisting mainly of digital histopathology images. An ideal candidate would be excited to play a role in shaping our fast-growing, interactive environment and in the development of our imaging infrastructure in an automated, scaleable manner. This role will be responsible for identifying and evaluating emerging technologies in the field, like spatial transcriptomics and 3D histology as well as developing imaging processing pipelines (operating image acquisition instruments, tuning analysis algorithms).

  • Image acquisition analysis, interpretation and communication of data to support various projects

  • In collaboration with colleagues, develop protocols and in-house tools to support analyses of datasets

  • Support automation and lab workflow systems for instrumentation and hardware

  • Generate technical reports, presentations, and strategic opinions

  • Trainings, lab meetings and administrative work

 

Education and Experience Requirements:

  • MSc or PhD degree in relevant scientific areas; B.S. plus equivalent experience will also be considered based on overall experience and skills
  • Must have 3-5 years of experience in biological image analysis, particularly in automation of image acquisition and batch processing of microscopy data
  • Familiarity with commercial applications (i.e. HALO from Indica Labs) as well as freely available software (i.e. FIJI/Image J).
  • Programming experience preferred, especially in Python and R, along with the ability to document and control versioning (Git) to enable testing troubleshooting of internally-developed tools by Spark data scientists
  • Experience with with common statistical and machine learning/AI techniques
  • Proven interpersonal and communication skills, including preparing written reports and oral presentations, as well as transparent work practices

 

Key Skills, Abilities, and Competencies:

  • Strong technical and image analysis skills used in histopathology labs
  • Knowledge of one or more common data science languages, such as Python, R, etc.; proficiency in programming preferred
  • Excellent writing and verbal communication skills.
  • Motivated, organized and enjoys working across functions and teams
  • Ability to analyze and troubleshoot experiments.
  • Strong motivation to support and train colleagues on how to develop and perform basic and advanced image analysis protocols in a reproducible, unbiased manner

 

Complexity and Problem Solving:

  • Demonstrate independent problem solving skills of technical issues; develop solutions to a variety of moderate to complex problems.
  • Comfortable with working in both a vertical (management) as well as horizontal (colleagues across functional areas) manner to accomplish tasks and receive guidance.
  • Must be comfortable in the fast-paced, biotech start-up environment and interact with multi-disciplinary research teams at Spark.
  • Exercise judgment within defined procedures and practices to determine appropriate action.
