The Search and Evaluation Lead will support the identification and evaluation of new business opportunities and enabling technologies in gene therapy and related areas that are a good strategic fit with Spark’s strategy or provide a leveraged entry into new therapeutic areas.  

 

S/he will coordinate and/or lead the internal evaluation of new technologies with R&D scientists, initiate and manage due diligence activities.   The person in this role will effectively interface with internal stakeholders in the technical, regulatory, legal, commercial and manufacturing disciplines to enable the completion of diligence activities for new opportunities.   

 

The individual will contribute to term sheet discussions, financial analysis to value opportunities, and contract negotiations for potential collaborations with universities/tech transfer offices and selected other third parties as required.

 

This role will focus on CNS and ophthalmology or Liver and Immunology.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

 

  • Work closely with R&D colleague(s) to understand gaps in portfolio and technologies; proactively identify opportunities to close gaps and continue to ensure that Spark remains a leader in gene therapy
  • Identify, review and provide recommendations based on scientific/technical merit and strategic fit of new r&d collaborations, in-licensing & M&A opportunities that are consistent with strategic direction of Spark
  • Manage the diligence cross-functional evaluation of potential opportunities with internal experts including (but not limited to) BD transaction colleagues, commercial assessment, R&D, medical, external KOLs
  • Coordinate the presentation of opportunities to management review committees for progression to due diligence; Serve as member of due diligence teams to provide guidance as needed.
  • Attendance at major scientific/partnering meetings to help identify opportunities and to build professional networks (pharma partners, biotech companies, academic institutions and investor groups/venture capital)
  • Lead asset/technology evaluation efforts and serve as a member of deal teams
  • Bring best practices to business development diligence activities and further develop diligence capabilities at Spark

 

 

REQUIREMENTS:

 

  • Scientific degree required; advanced degree strongly preferred (PhD or MD) in disease areas of interest
  • 8-10 years of pharma or biotech experience or combination of biotech/pharma/gene therapy
  • Solid understanding of pharmaceutical R&D and business development
  • Experience sourcing and evaluating pharmaceutical or biotech products for potential licensing/acquisition
