As Head of Alliance Management, this role is responsible for ensuring the efficient day-to-day operation of this group to ensure that alliances/collaborations are effectively managed and acquired companies or assets/technologies are effectively integrated into Spark. This person may also be expected to perform the Alliance Management role on one or more alliances or as act as a liaison on internal collaborations with the Roche Group.

 

As a leader within the broader Program and Alliance Management (P&AM) team this role will be the owner of the Center of Excellence (CoE) for Alliance Management and will work to further establish best practices and partnering excellence across Spark.  This role will also be expected to provide input into strategic projects and/or business development opportunities for Spark.

 

The ideal candidate is has deep Alliance Management experience, with expertise in strategic thinking, problem solving, risk mitigation and negotiation and is able to quickly become a trusted colleague to both internal and external partners.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

 

40%- Accountable for activities occurring across Spark’s portfolio of alliances, collaborations and/or integrations including:

 

  • Ensuring seamless handoff from Business Development and a successful alliance launch for new collaborations
  • Providing direct ongoing management of operational activities and performance within alliances and collaborations
  • Ensuring operational-level conflicts are resolved and organizational alignment maintained
  • Develop and execute integration strategy for acquired companies, assets or technologies. Manage integration governance.
  • Develop alliance and integration success metrics and reporting tools.
  • Continuing to enhance the Alliance Management operating model and build and embed functional capabilities as a Center of Excellence
  • Providing input into initial alliance deal structure and support strategy on how to expand/modify alliances, when applicable 

 

Up to 40% -The Alliance Management Head may also be required to provide alliance management support for specific teams and/or alliances, including:

 

  • Work with new and existing partners to achieve partnership goals.
  • Lead efforts to establish mutual understanding, respect, trust and good communication between alliance partners.
  • Establish common understanding of the operational framework, drive governance bodies to ensure alliance progress and issue resolution per contractual mandate.
  • Ensure cross functional monitoring, coordination and mutual compliance with contractual obligations.
  • Develop partner insights: understand partner organization, decision making, interests. Facilitate mutual understanding of the respective organizations.
  • Proactively engage partners to manage issues, unexpected events, resolve conflicts at the lowest level. Drive process, decision making on renegotiations, alliance conclusion as appropriate. 

 

20% - Provides leadership to team members including managing performance, developing people, hiring and integrating new team members and fostering Spark’s culture, mission, vision and values.  (current team size is ~1 expected to grow to 2 direct reports by mid-year 2021)

 

REQUIREMENTS:

 

  • B.A./B.S. degree required. MBA or science related graduate degree preferred
  • Generally has 15 years of life sciences (Pharmaceutical and/or biotech) industry experience required
  • Hands-on Alliance Management experience including managing complex alliances required
  • Thorough understanding of contracts, partnerships, experience in negotiations, alliance management and /or M&A integration
  • Experienced, hands-on project manager adept at establishing processes, defining “playbooks” and templates, and managing cross-functional teams through significant ambiguity and complexity·
  • Experience leading and/or significantly contributing to integration of acquisitions
  • Strong general management and leadership qualities and an ability to influence across company lines and to communicate at the Executive Committee level.
  • Understanding of the drug development process and working knowledge of the essential activities for all key functional areas.
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills, relationship building skills, ability to navigate organizations and with individuals at all levels.
  • Ability to manage difficult conversations and interactions as they arise. Ability to manage and resolve conflict; negotiation skills.
  • Line management experience required
