Primary Duties:

 

The Direct Sourcing Lead is accountable for providing direction to the company’s direct procurement function.  This position will drive strategic sourcing solutions through a consultative approach in support of optimizing Spark’s Total Cost of Ownership.  The Sourcing capability covers the core procurement activities from category management, strategic and operational sourcing, supplier management, content strategy definition, and execution.  This position will liaise with cross-functional business partners and operating leaders across the organization and play a critical role in scaling the business.  The individual will be a hands-on leader of the direct sourcing function, providing both strategic and tactical decision support for the company and furthering the efforts to expand the culture of financial stewardship.  This role is a key member of the Procurement Leadership Team and will report into the Strategic Sourcing Leader.

 

Responsibilities

 

  • Develop, communicate and execute the procurement strategy across all direct materials and service categories.  Includes comprehensive accountability for strategic sourcing, category management, contract management, risk management, stakeholder management, the procure to pay process, and supplier relationship management.
  • Partner with Roche, utilizing the global footprint to leverage the team’s annual spend.
  • Lead the procurement activities to support the implementation of direct strategic sourcing projects.  This role will manage the designated category to optimize COGS, ensure quality and assurance of supply, drive productivity, and support the continuous improvement and growth agenda of Spark.
  • Establish an effective partnership with the direct Business Partners, sharing the ownership and accountability in meeting the agreed upon deliverables.
  • Execute sourcing strategies to achieve year over year value in savings and risk mitigation with improved supplier performance.
  • Develop effective relationships with key suppliers that builds mutual respect, trust, and drives performance in a manner consistent with the Spark values.
  • Lead multifunctional teams to manage strategic supplier performance to improve execution, establish performance metrics, and drive accountability for service level delivery.
  • Lead de-risk of raw material, equipment, and/or service supply base.
  • Establish direct governance process to ensure involvement and buy-in of all key stakeholders.
  • Partner with Materials Management to ensure appropriate contractual structure delivering a raw material/CMO supply plan that meets forecasted production demand and safety stock required by the inventory strategy.
  • Bring best-in-class insights to influence direct procurement strategy by leveraging market insights and innovation.
  • Develop and implement balanced scorecard metrics and reporting mechanisms that drive improvements in Total Cost of Ownership for all major categories of spend.
  • Assist in developing a supplier relationship management program that ensures best-in-class supplier delivery and performance metrics.
  • Effectively manage category supply base, perform advanced negotiations, and ensure expedient and compliant implementation of contracts.
  • Monitor vendor and internal performance against contracts, industry benchmarks, and previous baselines.
  • Improve operational efficiency and optimize spend through the development of a preferred supplier program.
  • Deliver step change improvement in organization capability along with operational and financial delivery.
  • Grow Spark procurement capability by assisting in development and deliverance of processes, training, procurement technology, and knowledge management tools.
  • Ensure the use of procurement systems and technologies to manage procurement data, transaction costs, and adherence to internal and external compliance requirements.
  • Implement policies and procedures for major direct and operating expense investment project validation and governance.  Conduct pre- and post-implementation reviews of projects to evaluate timing; evaluate risk; calculate financial impacts, including return on investment (ROI), total cost of ownership, and net present value of cash flows.
  • Develop, mentor and empower the procurement direct team to maintain a high performing category sourcing unit.

 

 

Education and Experience Requirements

 

  • Minimum 12 years of relevant experience in procurement with 5+ years of experience managing teams and projects.
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver superior financial and non-financial benefits to the company.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Science, Engineering, Finance, Supply Chain or equivalent.  MBA or procurement qualification (e.g., CPSM or CPSD) valued.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of sourcing methodologies, negotiations, and contract management, achieving results that meet or exceed strategic plan expectations.
  • Ability to optimally structure and execute supplier and/or CMO contracts to maximize value.
  • Experience with opinion leaders and technical experts as well as broad exposure to the pharmaceutical/biotech or other regulated industry strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated excellence in negotiations and management of sourcing agreements required.
  • Advanced analytical skills, financial and business acumen, and ability to lead a diverse team.
  • Thorough knowledge of sourcing practices, tools, and relevant systems.
  • Strategy development and implementation; strong value creation capability.
  • Demonstrated stakeholder management and strategic influencing skills.
  • Solid working knowledge of strategic sourcing methodology, principals and foundations as well as thorough understanding of the commercial code, legal aspects, and compliance elements related to sourcing.
  • Experience having served in a similar position within a high-growth lower to middle-market ($50M to $250M) company combined with prior experience in a complex global organization is a plus.
  • Proven project management skills. Demonstrated success in managing broad scope projects involving cross-functional teamwork.
  • A track record of managing and mentoring high-performing teams, and leading/influencing through others.
