The Corporate Development Lead will support the identification and evaluation of transformative new business opportunities and enabling technologies in gene therapy and related areas. The individual will oversee and lead corporate development activities including acquisitions, product and IP licensing, strategic collaborations, and provide overall corporate perspectives to other business relationships. The Corporate Development Lead will also work closely with the Head of Business Development and Strategy Lead to ensure consistent processes are put in place for developing business cases (e.g. strategic rationale, financial metrics, deal terms, etc).

 

The person in this role will interface with colleagues in Spark Corporate/Portfolio strategy, research and development, commercial, technical operations, medical, legal groups, Roche Partnering and Roche Corporate Development to manage the deal process and efficiently drive transactions to closure:

 

  • Work with the Head of Business Development and Strategy in the identification of new business opportunities and deal structures that are a good strategic fit with Spark’s strategy
  • Manage term sheet creation process and coordinate deal negotiations in collaboration with legal / IP partners (internal and external) to draft, negotiate and close contracts
  • Support development of business cases in collaboration with Corporate Strategy to enable deal assessments and positioning
  • Lead due diligence of opportunities include coordination of internal teams as well as definition, framing and tracking of due diligence activities
  • Bring best practices to business development diligence activities and further develop diligence capabilities at Spark
  • Maintain database of key business transactions and scientific value drivers across the biotechnology industry
  • Support Search and Evaluation in evaluation of technologies of interest, scientific rationale and/or technical feasibility of relevant opportunities
  • Attend relevant industry scientific and/or medical conferences 

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

15% Identify new business opportunities and develop relationships

 

50% Perform corporate development activities in support of deal process and transactions

 

35% Define and lead due diligence activities which will include developing business cases and coordinating across key functions and stakeholders 

 

REQUIREMENTS:

 

  • MBA preferred (or will consider an M.D. /Ph.D. / J.D. with appropriate experience)
  • Generally, has 10+ years industry experience either in a business development/transactions role within the biopharma sector (may include experience in biopharma investment banking or a transactional-focused biopharma consultancy) 

 

COMPETENCIES:

 

 

  • Demonstrated understanding of new technologies/science in biopharma industry with a preference for experience in rare diseases and/or genetic medicine
  • Experience working with asset and/or supply purchase agreements
  • Demonstrated track record of identifying strategic opportunities, developing recommendations and conducting deal process
  • Demonstrated ability to build internal relationships and influence without direct authority
  • Strong interpersonal, analytical and organizational skills
  • Strong decision-making ability, including ability to synthesize complex and diverse inputs to a problem and recommend solutions/preferred options
  • Skillful presenter of scientific and business topics to executives
  • Ability to create, understand and interpret financial models
  • Ability to frame business development projects to senior management
  • Proficient in Excel and PowerPoint
