The Community Engagement Lead will lead Spark’s overall community engagement strategy with a particular focus on Philadelphia-based community partners, where Spark is headquartered. Since its founding, Spark’s corporate social responsibility efforts have been focused on sparking positive change in the patient communities it serves, in the scientific community with which it collaborates and in the West Philadelphia community where its employees work, and this role will be instrumental in progressing this work.


Specific responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:


  • Developing and executing a proactive strategy to further establish relationships with community and industry partners, particularly in the Philadelphia market.


  • Evaluating stakeholders including industry groups, community organizations, and fellow biotech and healthcare companies as future potential community partners.
  • Collaborating with community partners to develop programming that will support the Company’s broad corporate responsibility objectives.


  • Liaising with executive leadership to identify employee engagement volunteer opportunities and executive-level engagement opportunities with key community partners.


  • Partnering and collaborating with fellow Corporate Communications and Community Engagement leaders to develop and drive a broad corporate communications strategy for Spark at the enterprise level.


  • Providing guidance on the latest trends community affairs to drive best practice.


  • Measuring, tracking and reporting on progress of community engagement programming.


  • Ensuring proper corporate approval for all grants and sponsorships, as well as appropriate corporate reviews for external content associated with community engagement activities. 





20% Strategic Planning: Lead the development and implementation of a proactive community engagement strategy in partnership with executive leadership, applying a strategic lens to engagement strategies in support of the Company’s goals and objectives.


30% Program Development: Develop and execute community programming and partnerships with third parties, as well as employee engagement opportunities.


30% Collaboration and Strategic Counsel: Work across teams, working closely with other Corporate Communications and Community Engagement leads and executive leadership, to move key projects forward. Continuously challenge programming to keep pace with industry best practice, and champion new, creative ideas through well structured, well-supported and clearly articulated points of view.


20% Project Management & Administration: Manage agency partners/vendors and budget to drive positive business outcomes.




  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Minimum of 15 years of professional experience, with at least 5 years supporting a corporation’s community engagement/giving initiatives.
  • Proven success building relationships between organizations and their local communities.
  • Strong strategic leadership experience in managing similar functions.
  • Demonstrated long-term perspective that extends beyond immediate initiatives
  • Proven success developing and articulating a clear narrative Proven experience in community affairs in a corporate setting, developing compelling programming with clear and measurable goals.
  • Knowledge of the Philadelphia community landscape required.
