The Attending Veterinarian will be responsible for establishing and leading Spark veterinary services.


The incumbent will play a key leadership role in facility operational readiness, regulatory inspection, and approval phases including AAALAC international accreditation.


The attending veterinarian will ensure departmental regulatory compliance with all Spark`s policies and the local, state, and federal regulations applicable to animal care and use.


The incumbent will oversee the veterinarian care for all animals including:

  • Provide routine clinical and emergency care to laboratory animals.
  • Manage veterinary care program and personnel in line with regulatory requirements, provide guidance and oversite to ensure animal health and welfare.
  • Develop and maintain the rodent colony health management program.
  • Identify, plan, and implement short- and long-term strategic and operational goals for the animal facility.
  • Manage controlled substance oversite and usage in compliance with Federal and State Regulations.
  • Work closely with Therapeutic area scientists and in vivo team in the development and implementation of animal models and new techniques.
  • Lead the development of animal use protocols for review by the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee.
  • Develop and implement training programs, SOPs, guidance, and workflow processes for the animal facilities and animal program.
  • Provide training for animal handling and use.
  • Provide clinical and surgical support for in vivo research, as needed.
  • Assessment of outsourcing facilities, training activities, review of animal use protocols, and scientific leadership for animal models of pharmacology and toxicology.



60% of time- Lead the animal care and use program. Monitor animal health and provide clinical/surgical support

20% of time- Train users in new and established techniques. Model development

20% of time- Manage compliance, participate in IACUC activities


  • DVM or VMD with Attending Veterinarian experience required, with 10-15 years of experience in Laboratory Animal Medicine preferred.
  • ACLAM Board certification or equivalent.
  • AAALAC site visit experience required.
  • Advanced skills training and mentoring staff.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and collaboration skills.
  • Accurate record-keeping and data-collection skills.


Spark takes into consideration a combination of candidate’s education, training, and experience as well as the position’s scope and complexity, the discretion and latitude required in the role, and external market and internal value when determining a salary for potential new employees.  The base salary range for this position is currently from $185,600 to $278,400.
