Summary

The Sr. Research Scientist is a key member of the Discovery Research Team and participates in the development of Spark’s gene delivery platform. She/he will actively participate in the development of novel nucleic acid nanoparticle formulations, facilitating translation from in vitro through in vivo proof of concept. 

 

He/she will be responsible for:

 

  • Developing processes enabling preparation of novel nucleic acid delivery formulations including lipid nanoparticles (LNP).
  • Collaborating with other Translational Research Scientists to design and conduct in vitro and in vivo experiments to optimize nanoparticle delivery vehicles.
  • Initiating and overseeing joint programs and collaborations with external parties.
  • Writing study reports, documents to support regulatory filings, manuscripts and present results at appropriate scientific meetings.

 

The Senior Research Scientist position requires extensive experience with including:

 

  • Development of nucleic acid formulation processes including manufacturing and optimization of nanoparticle delivery vehicles.
  • Analytical techniques related to biophysical characterization of nanoparticles including encapsulation assays, DLS, SEC, UV, HPLC, etc.
  • Familiarity formulating with various forms of nucleic acids is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Implement nucleic acid formulation capabilities including lipid nanoparticle synthesis and characterization to support pre-clinical studies. Identify and validate novel formulations and delivery methods to optimize transgene expression to support both existing and new programs in the pipeline. This includes executing experiments on the bench, extensive literature review, championing product candidate development from proof of concept to IND submission, etc.
  • Design experiments, organize, discuss, and record experimental data.
  • Generate technical reports, prepare presentation slides, generate novel concepts.   
  • Trainings, lab meetings and administration work 

Requirements

  • Typically has a PhD in Pharmaceutical Sciences, Chemical/Biomedical Engineering or Chemistry and 3-5 years of experience related to nucleic acid formulation and delivery. May also have a bachelor’s degree or master’s degree with 3-5 years of related experience.
  • Hands-on research experience with lipid nanoparticle formulations.
  • Familiarity with identifying novel and optimizing existing lipid nanoparticles using a combination of analytical and in vitro/in vivo techniques.
  • Experience with studies in laboratory animal models is preferred, but not required.

Competencies

  • Experience with nanoparticle formulations for delivering nucleic acid payloads
  • Experience with analytical techniques for nanoparticle delivery systems such as DLS, UV, HPLC, etc.
  • Familiarity with IND enabling studies, regulatory filings, and GLP studies is a plus
  • Strong analytical skills and problem-solving capabilities
  • Proven ability to work independently in hands-on laboratory setting, self-motivated to learn and develop new techniques, perform multiple tasks simultaneously, keep accurate records, follow instructions, and comply with company policies.
  • Excellent communication skills (both oral and written)
  • Familiar with computer software commonly used in bio/pharma industries.
  • Works with colleagues as a team player.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Strong publication record is a plus.
  • Experience managing external collaborations is a plus.
